Holy Trinity Help Us

Living in Chicago’s Logan Square for many years I came to appreciate Holy Saturday. On Holy Saturday we would gather our kids and go to Holy Trinity Polish Church on Noble Street to bless the Easter baskets. Even though raised Roman Catholic I was unaware of the Easter basket blessing tradition.

This tradition had many attractive features. The service was short, about 10 minutes, with no sermon. Afterward we would return home to lunch on the blest food.

Much to my delight a few years ago Our Lady of the Wayside started to embrace the Easter basket blessing tradition. But the service at OLW has gotten progressively longer now about 30 minutes and includes a sermon or speakers.

So for the sake of preserving a religious tradition, before it is lost forever, I recommend that OLW return to the original format for blessing Easter baskets. Lest the ham sandwich with fresh chrzan, kielbasa, and hardboiled eggs with wine gets impatient.
