Trump's lies in the headlines

The post below is a letter to the Arlington Heights Illinois, Daily Herald. It was mailed on February 19, 2017 and appeared in the print edition of the Herald on Monday, February 27, 2017. I must give the Herald credit for re-printing my letter without edit, but as usual the title was changed.

The editors changed the title from below to 'Call Out Lies in the Headlines', leaving out the crucial word; trump  For some reason the editors must always edit my titles.

Dear Fencepost Editors,

Title: Call Out Trump's Lies in the Headlines
Re: Front page February 17, 2017

The Daily Herald editorial board completely understands that most people do not read beyond the headlines. So why does the Herald continue to publish articles that have Trump's lies in the headlines and then attempts to refute those lies deep in the text of the article?

For example, on Friday, February 17 referring to Mr. Trump's lie of 'I inherited a mess. At home and abroad, a mess', the Herald published as a front page headline 'I inherited a mess'.

It was not until the 18th paragraph did the article get around to stating that Trump did not inherit a mess, especially at home. By just about every economic measure Mr. Trump has inherited a sound and growing economy. This is unlike President Obama who did inherit an economic mess from George W. Bush.

Maybe this is a feeble attempt by the Herald to appear fair and balanced. Unfortunately, at a time when Mr. Trump is desperate to own the truth, we need the Herald to clearly point out his lies in the headlines.
